Seeking permission to publish information about victims of sexual offences

Under Victorian law, there are restrictions on publishing information that could identify a victim of a sexual offence.

These provisions are found in the Judicial Proceedings Reports Act 1958, which was amended in February 2020.

The Magistrates' Court, Supreme Court and County Court have developed guidance to assist those wishing to publish information. The guide explains:

  • whose permission is needed in different situations; and
  • the process for applying to a court for permission where this is needed.

Contact details for agencies that can provide assistance are included in the guide and a form is provided for those making application to the Magistrates' Court.

Refer to the guide for people seeking permission to publish information about victims of sexual offences; and
the application for permission to publish details form.

Guidance and forms in similar terms are also available at the Supreme Court and County Court.
